When reading about the history of hip hop music, there is so much to discover. I was looking at how hip hop came to be in the 1970’s, and it really can be traced to one man, the founder of hip hop. He was a DJ in New York, although he was born in Jamaica. The guy used to DJ parties and use the turntables to do things to the records that would cause people to have more time to dance and show off their moves.
It was really interesting to see how this movement is what caught on with people, and so it is through dance more than anything, that hip hop music was created. You hear about big names that put out records after hip hop became famous throughout the country, but it got its start a decade before this began happening. I never knew that until today.
When studying the history of hip hop, there are many sub-genres that you can learn about, such as Atlanta hip hop and gangsta rap. At one point, hip hop collectively was the best selling music genre. That has since changed, but the popularity of hip hop music will always be significant, and it’s interesting reading about its roots in New York City and beyond.
